A New Book is Coming!

We are excited about our new book, set for world wide release from Penguin next year. It is called THE ENTITLEMENT TRAP, How to Rescue Your Child with a new Family System of Earning, Owning and Choosing.

Every parent who even hears the title seems to want this book, and want it now! The sense of entitlement that our kids today are growing up with is the biggest threat to their happiness—and to ours!

We would love your feedback on the book even as we write it!  The book will open with some little everyday vignettes showing how entitled our kids are feeling these days.

Let us give you a few excerpts from early in the book, just to give you a feel, and then show you a little series of brief everyday stories of entitlement. We would love to have you add a vingette by putting it in the a comment section below. We’ll love hearing from you and our editors will decide which ones will be included in the book.

Excerpts: THE ENTITLEMENT TRAP

“Just as the Eyres’ brilliant #1 bestseller Teaching Your Children Values provided a roadmap for a whole generation of parents in the 90s, their new work The Entitlement Trap gives today’s parents a warning about the trap of indulgence and instant gratification they may be creating for their children.  Then it offers families a compass on the directions they need today and shines breakthrough clarity on what kids will need to cope with our new and unpredictable economic realities.”

------Stephen R. Covey

Sports figures and celebrities think they are entitled to whatever they want; bankers think they’re entitled to huge bonuses; and our own children think they’re entitled to the latest cell phone.  The old mentality of working for things and waiting for a reward seems to have disappeared.  Without the sense of responsibility engendered by the work of earning and the pride of ownership, kids grow up thinking the world owes them a living, and with that attitude, they have little chance to develop the motivation and will-power that will allow them to be happy and to succeed.

What today’s kids need is to be sprung from the trap of entitlement and indulgence.  They need to own their choices, to own up to their mistakes, and to earn and own all their stuff rather than getting it handed to them.

Are we letting your kids fall into a trap that can make their lives (and ours) miserable?

Instead of giving our kids a sense of responsibility, are we giving them the exact opposite—a sense of entitlement?

Are we setting your kids up for disaster by not teaching them how to handle money?

Are our homes a little microcosm of a bad economy and a sick society….built on wants rather than needs, and on bail outs, debt, and instant gratification?

Are yesterday’s parenting methods completely unsuited for today’s world?

And are some of the old reliables like allowances and withholding of privileges just not helpful anymore and even becoming counterproductive in raising responsible kids?

Is the technology that surrounds and suffocates our kids sapping them of real world experience and taking away their chances to make good choices and become responsible?

Here are some vignettes that illustrate what we mean:

A thirty-something working mom who had been gone from her family for a week was greeted by her nine year old son with a big hug.  That night at dinner after a catch-up session about things that had happened while she was gone, her son quietly brought up something he had obviously planned quite carefully.  “Mom, you’ve been gone a long time and you missed my band concert. How about buying me the new Wii game to make up for it?”

A hard-working, service oriented twenty four year old decided that for a year her time would best be spent helping young women in the projects in Atlanta  They had all had hard lives and had been raised on the dole. None could remember ever sitting around a dinner table with their families but of course every one had a cell phone with a bazillion different ring tones. One day she was helping them sort out their lives when one of them said, “Hey I like your shoes!  They’re so cute!  How about you give ‘em to me?”  Stunned, she realized this girl was serious. “Hey, I worked hard for these shoes,” she declared as she realized she was looking straight into the face of ‘entitlement’!

A Sunday school class of hard working parents were asked if they thought their children felt as entitled as their peers who were not particularly religious. Almost like a chorus they declared, “Of course they are!  They all think they need cell phones like their friends! They claim they don’t have time to clean the bathroom because they’re so busy texting and doing their “homework” on the Internet.”Some of the parents thought entitlement was worse in faith centered families where kids felt they deserved special blessings in reward for their righteousness.

An eight year old boy was aghast when his mother suggested he might have to work to earn some money to replace the neighbor’s window that he had broken while throwing rocks. His argument was, “You’re my mom, that’s the kind of thing you are supposed to take care of!”

The Majesty of “The Cathedral”

Since I haven’t been on the horses this summer Dad sort of tricked me into coming out for a “little ride” on a day when I had 1000 things on my plate and it ended up being a three hour round trip ride to 10,000 feet in the air to what we call “The Cathedral”.

photo

Sorry about your head Lady but dad’s head was more important!

The Cathedral is part of an amazing organism at the top of that mountain where you would think that the air is so thin that nothing would grow. In reality there are the most amazing giant quakies all around that you feel as though you are in a cathedral. God’s handiwork is exraterrestrial there!  They, along with king-sized plants and flowers looked like a scene straight of Avatar.

majesty of The Cathedral

I couldn’t get very good pictures because Duffy just would not hold still. On the way back down Duffy was in a hurry to get back home after that steep climb and while concentrating on climbing over a big log he smashed my knee into a tree. The crash took a scoop of skin off my arm and literally crushed my knee between him and a tree he hadn’t noticed on the side. You know how when you have an owie, it’s always the thing that gets hurt?  Well there you have it. I’m recovering nicely however and Dad thinks maybe it will totally fix my knee problem at some point in the future just like Lady did my back!

On the way up we almost literally ran into a big moose with a rack about 7 feet across. He was across the stream about 30 feet away and looked at us as though we were a time bomb about to go off so he didn’t dare move and neither did we.  We were kind of scared so we didn’t get a good picture. When we came back 2 hours later, he was still in the exact same spot eating leaves.

This time he turned and looked at us like, “Oh those guys again? This is boring!” and walked off   You can see him in the upper third of the photo below if you look carefully.  Wish I knew how to quickly zoom in and so you could see that rack but alas, I only had my Iphone camera! He’s bigger than he looks!

Ah the beauty of the earth!

A Fabulous Mother’s Retreat!

Let’s face it! Everyone has career training but those who are engaged in the most important career…mothering!

In June, Saren, our oldest daughter and her gifted friend April Perry held the first ever Mother’s Retreat sponsored by their web site, PowerofMoms.com and have rave reviews from the moms who attended.

Now that summer is over and the kids are back in school, they have carefully crafted two more retreats in different parts of the country. One is in California and the other in New England.  If you or anyone you know really needs a boost in their mothering career will you send the information below on to them?

Here is what Saren has to say about this inspiring project:

“You can get a lot from mom-blogs and chatting with other moms when you get a chance - but there's nothing like a weekend of facilitated learning and sharing and laughing with other moms who take the profession of motherhood seriously. Learn how to really feel organized and more balanced along with other mothers who feel the need to hone their skills as mothers.

“Here's one of my favorite quotes from a Retreat attendee:

"I can't say enough good things about the Retreat I just attended. I came away a seriously changed person and mom. I mean I was a pretty decent mom before - but now I feel like I've got the direction and tools I needed to really become the mom I want to be. Plus it was so gratifying to meet all these other great moms who are as deliberate about motherhood as I am. I would have paid 10x as much for what I got from this Retreat and I'm telling every mom I know that they just HAVE to go to a Retreat if they possibly can. It'll change your life."

(To read more quotes click here. To read a full report of our last Retreat from Shawni - with lots of great photos - click here.)”

Our two upcoming Retreats are on opposite sides of the country so most people can get to one or the other with a not-too-long flight or drive. Check out these beautiful locations and click on the links below the photos to learn all the details - and please spread the word!

How beautiful is this Resort?  It's near John Wayne Airport and right between LA and San Diego.  I'm so excited to present with my dear friend and Power of Moms partner April plus some other amazing moms including one mom of 13!

"Get Organized" Southern California Retreat: September 17-18 (slots are filling fast so hurry!)

There are a few discounted tickets for those who register first.  Click HERE to register for these discounted tickets.

This historic hotel on New Castle Island (near Portsmouth and 1 hour from the Manchester or Boston airport) will be such a fun place for a Retreat!  We'll be there at the peak of the famous New England fall foliage (picture all those trees orange and yellow and red).  I miss New England and can't wait to go back for this Retreat (plus I get to present with my wonderful sister Saydi and my great new cyber-friend Sarah Turner).

New England Retreat: October 22-23 (Registration closes September 15th).
I sure hope that some of you can make it to one of these Retreats - I'd love to meet you! And please help spread the word to other moms who you think would be interested. I bet they'll thank you.

Cuts for Cami

Yesterday I was privileged to be with the Carver family for a truly blessed event!  It was called “Cuts for Cami” which was a great idea from one of the Carver’s friends.
Little Cami Carver was diagnosed with leukemia on July 10th and has been undergoing intensive chemo and steroid treatments to beat that horrible disease every day since.  She is absolutely adorable and has been through more in the past month than most of us do in a lifetime.
When her hair started falling out in chunks a dear family friend got a great idea!  Make a party out of the day they shaved her head.  They somehow located 12 superb hairdressers in the area who donated their time for five hours for people who wanted haircuts and wanted to donate to Cami’s cause. They gathered at Natalie and Jessica’s dance studio in North Salt Lake and anyone who wanted a haircut could come and donate whatever they wanted. Everyone contacted their friends and they put it on facebook and about 300 people showed up!
About midway through the afternoon Cami shaved her dad’s head with electric clippers and then he shaved hers! Her comment was, “Who needs hair anyway?”  What a sweet kid!  Kids were getting buzzes everywhere and darling Cami was changing hats about every 10 minutes amongst her new supply that people were giving her!
She has been suffering with steroid treatments for the past couple of weeks and that little tiny girl gained about 12-15 pounds. She was angry and listless and couldn’t even walk for a while. Thankfully when she went off the steriods she became herself again and has already lost about seven pounds. The doctors say that she will eventually lose more weight than she gained.
Cami was dancing to the music most of the time I was there and it seemed to be the greatest day of her life so far!  What an idea!  Congrats to Natalie (Tony’s wife) who rounded up so much help and once again every member of the Carver family who were all there helping…as usual.
Bruce must be leading the charge of guardian angels from the other side!
She went from this:

To this…in just over a month!

Ah…our trials, when mixed with love, bring such treaures!

Viva la Mexico!

After scrambling for a couple of days to catch up on being gone all of July we packed our bags again and headed out for an event in Mexico!  We were privileged to meet at an incredible place called The Hacienda resort in Cabo san Lucas.  One of the members of the group we were speaking to had bought two condos in this luxury resort, thinking that they would sell the second one to pay for the first one, but since it hadn’t yet sold, we had the privilege of staying there.

Actually I have to admit that we were ready for a rest!  So we rested for a few hours and then started work in these restful cushions on our balcony on the new book which was due on a desk at Deseret Book in five days.

The signature rocks of Cabo san Lucas were right out our window…

Now I wish i knew how to do those collages that our kids are so great at but so as not to bore you or give you pangs of jealously, I’ll give up on the photos.

I do have to say that we had a wonderful time with seven men and two women from Texas who were truly remarkable people.

One was Nolan Ryan’s son (one of the greatest baseball pitchers of all time for those of you who are as dumb as I am about baseball).  The front page of the sports in USA on my way down there was all about the big sale that was going on in the baseball world having to do with Nolan Ryan.

Two of the dads had kids with cerebral palsy and one had spent two hundred days in the hospital with his little twelve year old daughter with leukemia last year, only to have her slip into the next world on December 13th.

One dad was sleep deprived with a four year old and premature twins and a father critically ill in the hospital.  Having just given a talk on mourning in church the day before I came I once agin that mourning about you do have or what you don’t have is a universal experience.  It was an eye-opening, great learning experience for us!

What a great group this was!

2010-08-11 Shumways, Mexico, Cami 3755

We ate guacamole and chips and salsa and chips and fish tacos until, after four days, we were ready to try a steak!  How lucky are we??? It was a dream vacation with only two morning workshops to do and some precious time to  almost finish the book!

Like Greased Lightning

Life is happening faster than we can keep up with it!

While Saydi and Charity along with Charlie and Emmeline traveled to Rexburg to be with Saren on her 40th (yes you saw that right…40th…we can hardly believe it) birthday and be with her in her education week classes at BYU Idaho, the rest of us and with the help of a cleaning crew got things cleaned, moved out, organized and ready for renters on July 30th!

The next morning Charity and I took off for Salt Lake for the ward wedding shower for our darling Jane Boyer who has been bosom buddies with Charity ever since they were born!

Jane is like one of our kids and her family is one of our great treasures!  What a whirlwind those 24 years have been!

Next it was on to the wedding of Eddy Bacigalupi (Trina’s son) who served in Iraq after he returned from his mission in the Philippines and then returned to the Philippines to capture this adorable girl(who is returned missionary who served in Hawaii) and ask her to be his wife!

It was a happy day and a fun reunion!

2010-07-31 24th,treasure boxes,45 reunion, home 3691

Darling Francis and her husband and baby were there as well as Maxine and her cute husband and baby.

although Maxine’s husband and baby weren’t in sight when I took this picture, how can it be that these little girls are all grown up with babies of their own?

Trina and her husband Mike have just moved to Park City!  How crazy is that???

2010-07-31 24th,treasure boxes,45 reunion, home 3695

At Baliwood Noah and four of his former missionary companions and their families and his mission president and their families were enjoying Park City for a few days. I can’t believe I didn’t get one picture!

We had such fun time with Shawni and Lucy before they flew back (Dave took the other four and drove back) as well as Charity and Tal and Anita who dressed up especially for Swiss National Day on August 1st!

2010-08-01 24th,treasure boxes,45 reunion, home 3696

The scenery on the deck was almost as good as it is in Switzerland and the sunsets aren’t bad here either!

2010-08-01 24th,treasure boxes,45 reunion, home 3705

On Monday morning, August 2nd Noah and Kristi and fam and Talmadge took off for NYC. Shawni and Lucy flew off to Phoenix and Charity and Anita drove off in Charity’s car. Charity was over the moon about her new adventure and we are so grateful to Anita for driving out with her since it had been her plan to go to CA anyway to visit good friends.

For a combination of reasons Saydi’s flight wasn’t scheduled unit August 5th so we soaked that Shumway family in for a few days packed with good food (thanks to Saydi) and fun!

I took Hazel and Charlie to the “jumpin’ houses” while Emmeline slept…

We also went to the zoo and saw the new baby elephant…

Sometimes it’s great to have just one family at a time to dote on and to enjoy this good place with…

As always the kids found creative places to sleep. Under the piano on the sheepskin rugs hadn’t been thought of previously!

Saydi even got a chance to have a few of her dearest high school friends over for dinner. Amanda Boyer on the left is a mother of six and had just left her baby for the first time with her husband who is a bishop.

 2010-08-04 Shumways, Mexico, Cami 3735

On August 5th the summer reunion officially ended as Saydi flew off with those three kids facing two change of planes and Emmeline who had just hit a screaming stage. As it turned out, it was even worse than we had feared as there was a lighting storm (speaking of lightning) at their last stop and they had to sit on the plane for over two hours to make sure they weren’t going to get struck by lightning as one of the planes near them had on its descent.

BUT all’s well that ends well.  And everyone has arrived home intact including Josh from Ethiopia and all are on to their next adventures.

What a summer!  What a blessing it is that we can get this many kids for this long to love and bond with!  Now that it’s all over it seems like a dream…which comes next….

So goodbye for another year to our beloved Bear Lake…

What a summer!  Every year gets bigger and better!  How blessed we are to have had so many for so long!

A Morning in India

When we were in India in January we had a fun morning at a town near the Rising Star Outreach compound buying “dress up clothes” for all our granddaughters.  The result was a wild “Morning in India” at Bear Lake complete with a exuberant dance with music from Slumdog Millionaire.  Somehow every girl plus a couple of our cousin’s little girls found just the right Indian dress for them!
